Zeroland
Zeroland is a physical and a conceptual space…
In one sense, Zero means taking the greatest possible distance from the most damaging aspects of the currently dominant social, economic, and technical order. We do this by warding off hierarchical relationships, using technologies that can be created and maintained locally, being conscious of, and acting according to, our presence on indigenous land, and adopting a subsistence (regenerative) rather than a profit-based (exploitative) relation to that land.
At the same time as taking a distance from global business as usual, we also need to create new relationships and ways of meeting our needs at local levels. Zero, in this sense, is a play on the idea of the Zero Mile Diet, which we expand to Zero Mile technology, Zero Mile politics, Zero Mile friendships, and so on. This is where it’s helpful to be on an island - it’s pretty easy to know what is near, and what is far away.
