D-CENTRE
(Denman Centre for Alternative Living and Learning; a registered BC non-profit society)
D-Centre is a place for sharing skills and sensibilities that help us to live with greater self-reliance as the currently dominant order fragments and fails, around and within us.
We bring together elements of horizontal organizing, post-permaculture, decolonial land-based knowledge, radical theory, spirituality, and science and engineering .
We are keen to challenge the ways that many of these skills have become professionalized and isolated, so we make space for horizontal learning, with the aim of deepening our relationships with ourselves, the land, our neighbours, the Indigenous peoples whose territories we live on, and our friends and allies in the region.
We want D-Centre to remain truly decentred, as one node in overlapping networks of mutual aid.
THE BIG POND EVENT SPACE
As part of our efforts in recovering the property, we have restored a cabin and the area around it, which now serves as a base for hosting events. The site includes a large open/treed space with spots for setting up tents, outdoor fire pit, covered cooking facilities that have served 100 people, potable water supply, solar power and wireless access, as well as showers and outhouses.
In case of heavy rain - unfortunately very unlikely in the summer! - the cabin can accommodate a few people (on one bed plus sleeping mats). We also have a wall tent that can sleep 12-15 people.
We are happy to make this space available to individuals and groups who want to organize events that resonate with our vision and approach, and which will help us to build long-term relationships of reciprocity. Some of these events generate income to help pay our costs, some break even, and some we provide in the form of a gift to the community.
Please go to the Events page for an idea of the kinds of things we have been doing, and are planning to do.
